After an unsuccessful plan of Noida film city which is presently just the centre point of satellite news channels, the film city undertaking of Northern India will take what shape it will be on the steps of the vision of Uttarakhand government. 

Confirmation of Uttarakhand film city 

The proposed film city at Doiwala, Dehradoon will be in 25-50 acres of land, followed by another mini film city at Patwadangar, Nainital. Numerous Bollywood film makers, directors and financial specialists have been indicating enthusiasm on putting resources into the film studios and film institute at picturesque Uttarakhand. With the confirmation of Uttarakhand film city from the state government, the hold up is soon going to end with productive outcomes for the film aspirants and professionals of Northern India.

As a result of regular meetings of renowned Hindi film producers, directors and other film dignitaries, finally the CM of Uttarakhand Shri Trivender Singh Rawat announced a film city in Doiwala area. Doiwala city is in Dehradoon district have a connectivity of Air travelling through Dehradun airport and railway connection through Rishikesh & Doiwala railway station. While the road connectivity is through three significant urban areas of Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun. 

Most shooting-friendly state award winner

After Uttarakhand winning the award of the most shooting-friendly state in the 66th National Film Awards, the upcoming film city and academy will give another boost up to make Uttarakhand a film academic hub.

Since many Bollywood movies shoots have been effectively completed in the different locations of Uttarakhand, the new age film makers and professionals are intrigued to move base.  Along with, the government of Utarakahand is keen to invite the Bollywood industry to explore the natural scenic locations and resources. The Shooting friendly state government have welcomed Bollywood film makers with shooting equipment of their choice and necessary backups.

Despite the fact that the lake city Nainital is acclaimed worldwide for its excellence and wonderful disputants, however now Nainital will likewise be known as Mini film city. Since the state government has chosen to make another film city in Patwadangar, Nainital also. With the formation of a film city, Nainital will get a new identity. This will be the principal film city of Uttarakhand to encourage local cinema and culture. As an arrangement of Ministry of Information Broadcasting to empower Uttarakhand tourism, soon big film directors and actors from India and abroad will be seen shooting in the breath taking locations of Uttarakhand. The beautiful plaintiffs of Nainital are a very suitable place for film making.

This project of Uttarakhand government involves development of a Film City, providing production and post production services to local and foreign film makers, an amusement park with attractions/rides/ shows for kids, as well as other recreation activities for all age groups. The project also involves development of peripheral infrastructure, such as hotels, food & beverage establishments and retail areas including merchandise stalls to diversify the revenue composition. Longer stays and enhanced customer experience will contribute towards increased revenues for the Film City.

Last year, 6 films were shot in Nainital, 8 films and 4 web-series were shot around Dehradoon. Since the state government has taken the decision and initiative to make Uttarakhand a film destination, the work is in progress. The idea is to benefit the unemployed or seasonally employed North Indian youth. Along with this, there will be an opportunity to enhance the talent of the artists & technicians from Uttarakhand and neighbouring Hindi speaking states by giving them employment opportunities at home.

The future destination of Hindi film industry

The Film Board have already visited the area and the team sent the report of the area to the Central government and said that there is a suitable place to make a film city.

Uttarakhand Film City’s studios and complex shall provide all the facilities required for film making to movie producers across the globe, including the flexibility to use the outdoor spaces for shooting purposes easily. It will comprise of several studios, sets, backlots, a wide range of production and post-production and other film industry services/ facilities that can accommodate several film and television productions simultaneously. Uttarakhand Film City will not only be used by Bollywood and foreign film makers but will also serve as a popular tourist spot and recreation centre featuring many natural and artificial attractions including gardens, landscapes, amusement parks, statues, miniatures, streets, hotels, restaurants and shopping destinations. Tourists can take studio tours across the complex. 


For any foreign film production intending to shoot in Uttarakhand, will need to inform the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of its intention to do so. The form will have the mention of dates of shooting, particulars of cast/crew, four copies of the final detailed shooting script and chosen locations at least a month in advance along with a draft of US$ 225. MIB will then help the filmmaker obtain permissions to shoot across chosen locations within three weeks. The permission letter issued by the Government of India will facilitate permissions from local authorities across States.


Also to facilitate the shooting procedure, a liaison officer may be assigned to the team shooting a film. This officer helps the filmmaker obtain local clearances and enable an interface with local institutions. The Government of India bears the expenses of a liaison officer assigned to a film shooting team. As there is a single window policy for the approvals, some permissions can be granted within a day’s time. Hence the shooting in Uttarakhand will be smooth, safe and comfortable.
